Receiving from Production in SAP Extended Warehouse Management – Overview

Today I would like to bring your attention a presentation our Product Management team has prepared that provides a detailed overview on Receiving from Production in EWM.
When talking about receiving from production this presentation is referring to the overall process of receiving the produced materials from a manufacturing order and then do the put away of received goods in the Extended Warehouse Management system. EWM supports different options of receiving from production, whether it was triggered by SAP EWM, SAP ERP or SAP ME/MII.

There are multiple confirmation transactions/apps to do the receiving from production when the receiving is triggered by the ERP system. The transactions or apps being used depend on which production process is present on the shopfloor. For ERP triggered receiving the options depend on what you are using:

  • Production orders for Discrete Manufacturing
  • Process orders for Process Manufacturing
  • Planned orders for Repetitive Manufacturing
  • Receiving of pre-planned Handling Units

It is important to note that since SAP S/4HANA 1909, delivery processing can be avoided with immediate goods movement postings when doing receiving for repetitive manufacturing. Through this process, stocks are in better synchronization.

For EWM triggered receiving from Production, there are different options through which you can do the receiving:

  • Using Expected Goods Receipt document to do the receiving (only for decentral EWM)
  • Desktop transactions
  • RF transactions
  • Manual creation of inbound delivery in EWM

For each of these options, you can find several transactions or examples in the “Receiving from Production” presentation we linked in this blog.

Finally, receiving from Production can be done using Manufacturing Execution System (SAP ME or third-party MES) or SAP Manufacturing Integration & Intelligence (SAP MII). For this type of receiving, SAP EWM must first connect with a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). There are also  different options of SAP EWM to MES integration:

  • SAP EWM integrates with SAP ME via SAP ERP
  • SAP EWM integrates with SAP ME directly
  • SAP EWM integrates with an MES via EWM API

For more detailed information on the features and benefits of using MES integration for receiving, you can read the 4th chapter of the “Receiving from Production” presentation.

I would also like to note some differences of receiving from Production between using embedded EWM and using decentral EWM. A decentral EWM exclusive function is receiving from production using Expected Goods Receipt document for independent receiving operations. Functions working only with embedded EWM are Synchronous Goods Movement Postings for repetitive manufacturing, and reading the manufacturing order directly instead of using the EGR document.

We are continuously working on adding new functions and tightening the integration between SAP EWM and production. To that end, our planned scope for the 2020 release of On-Premise EWM will cover more Synchronous Goods Movement Posting Scenarios. Some of the highlights from the upcoming release are:

  • Synchronous goods movement from ERP to EWM in confirmations from discrete manufacturing and process manufacturing (for repetitive available since 1909) and in transaction MIGO
  • Synchronous goods receipt of HUs from ERP to EWM in repetitive, discrete and process manufacturing
  • UI integration between MM-IM material document display in MIGO and EWM

For the full list of options, transactions, apps and examples of receiving from production in EWM, I highly recommend you read the full “Receiving from Production in SAP EWM Overview” document which we have linked here and at the beginning of the blog.

We will do a follow-up blog on staging to production in SAP EWM, as well as a full overview of the 2020 SAP EWM release, so please stay tuned.
