What You’ll Learn in “Basic Customizing in SAP S/4HANA EWM”
If you’re planning to implement SAP EWM, this course is designed for practical application and understanding the system environment to implementing key warehouse processes and basic integration with SAP ERP. In this blog I’ll take you through the structure of the course and how to expand on these skills.
In the “Applying Basic Customizing in SAP S/4HANA EWM” course, you’ll learn to configure and apply essential implementation steps, including integrating SAP EWM with SAP ERP, creating product and packaging master data, defining warehouse structures and process types, implementing putaway and pick strategies, handling stock movements (postings, transfers, replenishment), and running basic physical inventory and post-processing tasks. The course does not cover advanced processes such as wave management.
Course Structure
The course contains 11 units and should take roughly six hours of focused lessons. Below is a breakdown:
- Unit 1 — System environment
Understand EWM’s place in the S/4HANA landscape: deployment options, architecture, and how embedded EWM differs from decentralized setups. - Unit 2 — Setting up integration
Learn how to connect SAP ERP and EWM so that documents (deliveries, purchase orders) and master data flow correctly. Integration is foundational—without it, core inbound and outbound processes won’t function.
- Unit 3 — Structural elements and master data
Configure warehouses, storage types, sections, bins, product master data, and packaging specifications. Proper master data and structure ensure accurate stock visibility and predictable warehouse behavior. - Unit 4 — Warehouse process types
Define standard process types used to trigger warehouse tasks and document flows. These are the building blocks for inbound and outbound logic. - Unit 5 — Receiving goods
Covers goods receipt processes: direct and rule-based putaway, capacity checks, and posting goods receipts (GR) in embedded EWM. This unit shows how to get products into the right places efficiently. - Unit 6 — Shipping goods
Focuses on outbound flows and picking strategies—critical for on-time delivery and accurate shipments. - Unit 7 — Storage control
Introduces storage control configuration to map ERP warehouse tasks to physical activities and to control bin-level movements. - Unit 8 — Creating warehouse orders
Learn how warehouse orders are created and managed—central for coordinating work across resources and tasks. - Unit 9 — Posting changes, stock transfers, replenishment
Covers the mechanics of moving stock between types and statuses, posting corrections, and setting replenishment triggers—day-to-day operations you’ll configure and support. - Unit 10 — Physical inventory
Covers configuration and execution of inventory counts and adjustments—essential for auditability and accurate stock. - Unit 11 — Post Processing Framework
Provides an overview of PPF to automate follow-up actions (notifications, status changes) after key events.
Why these skills matter in practice
1. Faster, smoother go-lives: solid basics reduce rework during detailed configuration and testing.
2. Fewer operational exceptions: well-defined putaway/pick rules and capacity checks minimize manual interventions.
3. Better integration: a correct ERP–EWM setup reduces document mismatches and stock inconsistencies.
Tips to get the most from the course
- Practice in a sandbox system: configuration concepts become clear when you try them.
- Map course concepts to your warehouse processes: draw current vs. target flows to see where settings apply
After completing the basic course, you can advance to topics such as labor and resource management, wave and yard management, automation, and more extensive integration within the Business Suite. Links to these courses can be found here.
Wrapping Up
Completing the SAP EWM basic course gives you a solid foundation in warehouse management fundamentals, practical configuration skills, and hands-on processes you can apply on a project. With this base, you’ll be better equipped to set up SAP EWM basics. Whether you’re upskilling for implementation skills or preparing your team for digital transformation, this course is a practical first step toward greater efficiency and control in your warehouse operations. In my next blog, I’ll cover advanced topics and real-world implementation tips.
