SAP released core ERP which is now named as ECC (Enterprise core component) first. Applications like Extended warehouse management (EWM) , Transportation management ( TM ) were released subsequently. These three applications have three different Packaging approaches with three different engines as stated below.
· ECC – Packing Instruction (PI)
· EWM – Packaging specification
· TM – Package builder
These packaging engines are used to build packages or Handling unit (HU). It was quite a bit of challenge to harmonize the master data and these packaging objects if a customer uses all of these three applications for the same site.
SAP has now come up with the concept of ‘Unified Package Building’ a.k.a UPB as depicted in below image (copied from SAP document).
UPB is a new concept and is maturing over releases. One particular object can now be used across these applications (ECC or S/4HANA, EWM and TM) when UPB is fully developed. Unified Package Building profile has the option to choose a particular engine as shown in below image.
With S/4HANA 2022 release , it is now possible to use Packing instruction of core ECC or S/4HANA in creating Handling unit in EWM as shown in below image.
Packing instruction or Packaging specification of EWM is used to pack specific number of products with a packaging material to create a Handling unit. Now, packing instruction of S/4HANA core can also be used to pack in EWM (instead of Packaging specification of EWM) as shown in below image.
Six pieces of product FG12 has been packed with a packaging material PACK_EWM (as in above image) considering the target quantity of 6 Pc of FG12 in one packaging material PACK_EWM as set in Packing instruction as shown in below image.
This unification of packaging engine with Unified packaging profile will make the life much simpler and smoother for the complex supply chain run by SAP.
This blog is based on my personal tests, observations in embedded EWM on S/4HANA 2022 release. Will appreciate your feedback / comments.
